We love to camp and hike. So, if you love to camp also, follow us on our camping adventures. We will give you our recommendations and the ins and outs of where we have been and where we want to go. We have camped in the back of our Blazer, a pop-up camper, a 40-ft fifth wheel and now we have a 27-ft camper. So we are not primitive campers, but we do enjoy campgrounds rather than RV parks. Being one with nature - trees, hiking trails, and sometimes lakes. Our favorite places to camp are the state and national parks. You can usually find full hook-ups at most state parks, but a lot of the national parks are more primitive. We lived full time in our fifth wheel for 3 1/2 years while we travelled across the U.S. We have two puppies we take with us whenever we go camping. They love the outdoors as much as we do.
Meet Bailey and Lexi.
This is our camper.
We really enjoyed our fifth wheel, but we found it too large to get into a lot of the state parks that we wanted to visit. So we sold it and bought this camper and it is perfect for our needs.
Some of our favorite nearby state parks are in Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee.
A few of our favorites are:
Georgia State Parks
Vogel State Park is up in the Northeast Georgia Mountains right along the Appalachian Trail. It has a wonderful hike to the top of the mountain. It was one of our favorite hikes, but it is on the strenuous side.
F.D. Roosevelt State Park is located in Pine Mountain, Georgia. While you are there, you must visit Roosevelt's Little White museum. There is so much history there.
Providence Canyon State Park is another must see in Southwest Georgia. It is known as the Little Grand Canyon of Georgia. They only have primitive camping there, so if you have a camper and need hook ups, you will have to find another campground. The closest state park that offers hook ups is Florence Marina State Park which is about 10 miles away.
Alabama State Parks
DeSoto State Park is located in Northeast Alabama mountains. It has a beautiful waterfall, wonderful hiking trails, and a zip line course. If you go out the back entrance and turn right, you will discover a little church built around a bolder. It has a very interesting history, it's worth checking out.
Cheaha State Park is located East of Birmingham at the Southern most tip of the Appalachian Mountains. It is the highest point in Alabama. It has lots of hiking trails, beautiful vistas. The Vista Cliffside Restaurant is right on the edge of the mountain. Unfortunately, it is temporarily closed due to a staffing problem.
Monte Sano State Park is located right in Huntsville at the top of Monte Sano Mountain. You may think urban camping, but no, once you get on top of that mountain, you are in a nice, wooded, serene park. There 20 miles of hiking trails, and 14 miles of biking trails. The vistas are beautiful. If you decide you need a day trip to the city, you are close enough to enjoy all Huntsville has to offer.
Tennessee State Parks
Chickasaw State Park is situated on some of the highest terrain in west Tennessee. Of the area’s 14,384 acres of timberland, 1,280 acres are used for recreation. Chickasaw State Park offers various activities for visitors to embark on including more than four miles of easy to moderate hiking trails and bicycle-friendly roads. Guests can utilize the rowboats and pedal boats available for rent on Lake Placid.
Rock Island State Park is an 883-acre park located on the headwaters of Center Hill Lake at the confluence of the Caney Fork, Collins, and Rocky Rivers.
Known for its rugged beauty and impressive waterfalls, the park includes the Caney Fork River Gorge (the gorge), one of Tennessee’s many national treasures. The gorge is a popular location for hiking and swimming offering deep-blue pools, scenic trails, and cascades—including Great Falls, a 30-foot waterfall located below the 19th-century cotton textile mill that it powered more than 100 years ago.
